Evangelia’s MSc Biosciences Journey
Returning to formal education while working full-time is a challenge few would take on, but for Evangelia, it became a transformative journey that reshaped her career and unlocked new opportunities.
From 2020 to 2022, while working as a Clinical Pathology Principal Investigator at Labcorp, she studied part-time at University Centre Leeds, completing the MSc in Biosciences (awarded by the Open University). She also completed the Level 7 Research Scientist Apprenticeship in 2023, further strengthening her expertise in genetic toxicology.
Several modules left a lasting impact, equipping Evangelia with knowledge directly applicable to her professional work:
- Applied Biomedical Techniques – understanding disease mechanisms to guide effective drug development.
- Cellular Pathology – mastering tissue histology and identifying drug toxicity at the microscopic level.
- Diagnostic Techniques – enhancing precision in clinical assays and improving data analysis skills.
- Advanced Pharmacology and Toxicology – learning drug mechanisms, regulatory frameworks, and ethical research standards.
- Preparation for Research – developing project management and critical thinking through her dissertation on paracetamol-rifampicin drug interactions.
These experiences gave Evangelia the confidence to translate academic learning into professional excellence in her role as a Genetic Toxicology Study Director.
Returning to postgraduate study as a mature student wasn’t easy. Balancing work, study, and personal life brought moments of self-doubt. Yet Evangelia overcame these challenges with discipline, curiosity, and the unwavering support of UC Leeds lecturers and apprenticeship mentors.
“The lecturers weren’t just academically brilliant - they treated me as a person,” she says. “Their encouragement, flexibility, and understanding made it possible to manage work and study while balancing a demanding job and personal commitments. They helped me believe in myself and achieve more than I thought possible.”
Evangelia’s story demonstrates how determination, structured support, and a genuine passion for learning can elevate both career and personal growth. Her journey shows that returning to study, even as a mature professional, can be life-changing — providing new skills, confidence, and opportunities for advancement.
For anyone thinking about going back to education, Evangelia’s experience is a powerful reminder: with the right guidance, perseverance, and ambition, it’s possible to achieve more than you ever imagined.
